Dipankar Lahiri

Born in Bangladesh, 1936. Professional training in Geology at Presidency Colege and Calcutta University followed by doctoral research at Jadavpur University. After working for sometime in the coal belts of Jharia and Dhanbad, joined the Central Ministry of Food and Agriculture as Geologist in its Exploratory Tube wells Organization. In the beginning of 1962 joined the State Education Service. Till retirement in 1996 worked successively in BESU that was then B.E.College, Durgapur Government College and Presidency College. Side by side with professional writings and books he wrote numerous popular science articles both in Bengali and English. The first science based novel came out in 1974. It was followed by history of Indian earth sciences, textbook for honours level, Bengali terminology of the earth sciences, ancient legends in the light of modern science, two encyclopaedic dictionaries of earth sciences in Bengali and English, deconstruction of ancient Indian history, and finally a reference book on environment endowed with personal observations and analysis in the Indian subcontinent and south Bangladesh, and four western states of USA. The latest publication came out in 2010.
